Living in Canada

Geography and climate

  • Canada is the world's second largest country by total area
  • Canada is a country occupying most of northern North America, extending from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west and northward into the Arctic Ocean
  • Canada shares land borders with the United States to the south and northwest
  • Canada is a federation now comprising ten provinces and three territories
  • Toronto's climate is moderate for Canada due to its southerly location within the country and its proximity to Lake Ontario
  • It has a humid continental climate, with warm, humid summers and generally cold winters, although fairly mild by Canadian standards
  • The city experiences four distinct seasons with considerable variance in day to day temperature, particularly during the colder weather season.
  • Toronto winters sometimes feature short cold snaps where maximum temperatures remain below −10 °C (14 °F), often made to feel colder by wind chill
  • Summer in Toronto is characterized by long stretches of humid weather. Daytime temperatures occasionally surpass 35 °C (95 °F), with high humidity making it feel oppressive during usually brief periods of hot weather.
  • Spring and Autumn are transitional seasons with generally mild or cool temperatures with alternating dry and wet periods.

Food

  • Canadian cuisine varies widely from region to region
  • Generally, the traditional cuisine of English Canada is closely related to British and American cuisine
  • The traditional cuisine of Quebec and French Canada has evolved from French cuisine
  • The basis of both groups is traditionally on seasonal, fresh ingredients, and preserves
  • The cuisine includes a lot of baked foods, wild game, and gathered foods
  • Prepared foods were still a novelty for recent rural generations
  • Montreal's culinary fabric is perceived the best by allophone communities
  • Italian, Greek, Portuguese and Jewish communities have contributed to the making up of Montreal's delicatessens and other restaurants.
  • Jewish culinary contributions extended to two of the world-renowned smoked meat sandwiches and Montreal style bagels.
  • Lebanese falafels and Japanese sushi have become appreciated cuisines.
  • This wide variety of cuisines certainly participates to the fact that Montreal is one of the cities with the most restaurants in the world. Due to all of the above, Montreal and its culinary landscape was the focus of Gourmet magazine's March 2006 issue.

Schooling

  • Education in Canada is provided, funded and overseen by federal, provincial, and local governments
  • Education is within provincial jurisdiction and the curriculum is overseen by the province
  • Education in Canada is generally divided into Elementary (Primary School, Public School), followed by Secondary (High School) and Post Secondary (University, College)
  • The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) operates 451 public schools and 102 secondary or high schools. This makes the TDSB the largest school board in Canada
  • There are also numerous private university-preparatory schools in Toronto, such as Upper Canada College, Crescent School, Toronto French School, University of Toronto Schools, Havergal College, Bishop Strachan School, Branksome Hall, and St. Michael's College School.
  • Education is compulsory up to an age of 16
